Wine Profile
Production Notes:
The 2019 season was characterized by heavy rainfall and a cold winter. Several atmospheric rivers brought storms with up to 6" of rain at times and a polar vortex decended from the north and touched us here in the Sierras producing quite a few days of snow at our 2000 ft altitude. The heavy rain continued through May making for a crazy start to the growing season. Bud break was a month later than usual but a warm summer quickly allowed the grapes to catch up and in our case was a normal harvest date. Our inspiration for this wine was a neighboring double gold medal winner that we love. We tracked down a special 2,800 altitude vineyard with 30 year old vines, completely hidden in a forrest, from which to get our grapes. Our Chardonnay was harvested on September 17 at a Brix of 23.5 and pH 3.3. The grapes were whole cluster pressed with a gentle bladder press and then crash chilled to settle. They were cold fermented over 15 days with no secondary malolactic fermentation. We chose to not add oak so you can taste the pure varietal from this special vineyard, resulting in a crisp, clean, fruity and refreshingly different Chardonnay. This Chardonnay is a zesty white with a lighter body, crisp acidity and citrus finish. It has aromas of apple, pear and flavors of tropical fruit. Perfect for such foods as chicken, fresh salads, grilled fish and a lighter pasta dish. This is our first bottling and we are extremely pleased with how it turned out and hope you will too.
Vintage Notes:
Our Chardonnay grapes are sourced from a neighboring high altitude (2,800 ft) vineyard in El Dorado County. Hidden behind a forest lies a beautiful hillside vineyard with 30 year old vine Chardonnay. The owner has been farming these grapes since they were planted and we worked closely with him to pick the perfect time to harvest. The vineyard benefits from cooler evening temperatures at that altutude and the old vines dig deep into the mineral soil producing exceptional grape flavors.
